Long gone are the days when a working woman left her job early on during the course of a pregnancy. In this day and age, the typical working mum stays on the job well into her pregnancy. Indeed, more than a few mums will work up until the very last minute provided there are no health reasons dictating that she needs to stay at home for the duration. (Of course, there are some types of jobs that simply do not permit a woman to work deep into her pregnancy … for example, positions that require a great deal of physical labor.)

If you are pregnant and intending to work up until the time you are about ready to go into labor, there are some steps that you can undertake to take care of yourself while at work. These steps include:

Keep your feet raised a bit. Do this by keeping a box or stool under your desk, for example.

Always where comfortable shoes. In addition, you might want to consider wearing maternity or support tights as well.

Dress as comfortably as possible.

If there are other mothers in your workplace, you might want to seek out their support. They’ve been there and can be helpful to you.

Make sure you take appropriate breaks. Stand up, stretch and move around if you have been sitting. On the other hand, sit down and raise your feet up if you have been standing.

Drink plenty of water.

Examine your work place. Make sure that your work place is as comfortable as possible and that it is situated in such a way to accommodate you being pregnant.

Do not over exert yourself – either at work, at home or elsewhere.

Eat properly and avoid drinking too much coffee or other beverages that contain caffeine.

Avoid potential work place hazards.

Reduce stress by doing things like deep breathing exercises or by even taking a short walk.

Accept assistance from your work colleagues. Do not conclude that you have to go it alone.

By following these suggestions, you will be able to work productively well into your pregnancy. You will be more comfortable at the workplace and you will end the day feeling less fatigued. Odds are that your employer or supervisor will be more than happy to work with you make you as comfortable as possible during your pregnancy.

Fetus in your wombIt perfectly is natural for you to worry about the welfare of your unborn baby. However, you do not want to concern yourself with things that are not be worried about when it does come to your baby. For example, more than a few mothers focus their attention on their baby’s kicking – which, of course, is a natural thing to do. At the same time, many mums also arbitrarily conclude that their babies should be kicking a certain amount each and every day. This leads to the obvious question of how many kicks from your baby should you feel on a daily basis.

Research studies have revealed that each baby individual baby develops his or her own sleeping and waking schedule while in the womb. In other words, every baby has his own activity pattern, a pattern that differs from one baby to the next. (This will carry over to the time when the baby is born as well. Each baby after he or she is born will develop his or her own unique activity patterns.)

In the end, there really is no set amount of kicks that you can expect from your baby on a daily basis. As you move later into your pregnancy, you likely will become more in tune with your baby’s movement patterns, however. You will start to recognize your baby’s own activity schedule.

You also need to keep in mind that if you are active, if you are doing other things that require your attention, you may not particularly notice your baby’s movements. Therefore, even though your baby may have been quite active, you simply may not have been aware of that activity.

There are a few things that you can do to “stir” your baby and encourage him or her to move if you have become “worried” about what is going on. These include:

lying down on your side and staying still (you will want to make sure you have support under your bump)

putting your feet up and relaxingplay music actually to your stomach (womb) area

If you really do come to conclude that your baby doesn’t appear to be moving as he or she normally had been, you will want to make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. However, it is important to pay attention to the points that have been made in this article pertaining to your baby’s movements.

Home Pregnancy TestHome Pregnancy Test

If you think that you might be pregnant, you may be considering dashing over to the druggist to get your hands on a home pregnancy test. If that is the case, you may be wondering about how a home pregnancy test actually works.

In simple, basic terms, a home pregnancy test measures the presence of a particular hormone in your urine. That hormone is human chorionic gonadotrophin or hCG. This particular hormone actually is secreted at the point in time that the fertilised egg is implanted in the uterus itself. Implantation normally occurs about five to six days following fertilisation. The hormone actually is released by the particular cells that will carry on to form the placenta.

The levels of this hormone, hCG, build up rapidly in your body following the implantation of the egg in the uterus, particularly during the first several days following this event. The levels of hCG actually peak between the 60th and the 90th days following conception.

Normally, a home pregnancy test is able to pick up the presence of hCG within your urine as early as the first day that you miss your period if you do experience fairly regular periods.

Keep in mind that merely because you have a negative test result with a home pregnancy test does not mean that you might not actually be pregnant. The negative test result may have occurred simply because the levels of the hormone mentioned previously in this article, hCG, simply have not reached a point where they can be detected by the home pregnancy test. Therefore, you likely will want to wait a few days and try the test again.

You also need to keep in mind that not all home pregnancy tests are the same. For example, there are some tests that are more sensitive to the presence of hCG and can detect the presence of this hormone even when only a small amount it may be present. These more sensitive tests normally will end up costing a bit more money than home pregnancy tests that are not as sensitive.

Of course, only a test administered by your doctor can allow you to be certain that you are in fact pregnant. Therefore, on the heals of taking a home pregnancy test that indicates that you are in fact pregnant, you should make an appointment to see your doctor.

Morning SicknessWhat Can Cause Morning Sickness?

One of the most common afflictions that pregnant mums experience is what commonly is known as morning sickness. With that in mind, you may be wondering what can cause morning sickness. Through this article, you are presented with some basic information about what can cause morning sickness. By having an understanding what can cause morning sickness, you will be in a better position of lessening the severity of morning sickness. You do need to understand that avoiding morning sickness or pregnancy related nausea may not be a possibility. However, and as has been noted, it is possible to reduce the severity of nausea during pregnancy.

The reality is that from a biological level, nausea during pregnancy actually is a positive sign. Nausea generally means that the hormones associated with pregnancy are high enough to ensure that your unborn baby will develop normally in the womb. In this regard, the main cause of pregnancy nausea is believed to be the human chorionic gonadotrophin hormone or the hCG hormone.

The hCG hormone is produced in large quantities until the point in time that the placenta begins to function and nourish the unborn baby. Because this is thought to be the primary cause of pregnancy related nausea, some doctors tell their patients that so-called morning sickness will resolve on its own at around twelve to fourteen weeks into the pregnancy. With that noted, there are other hormones involved as well, including oestrogen and thyroxine.

Moreover, pregnancy related nausea may also be the result of a disturbance in chemicals within the brain that are desired to assist a person to feel well, including serotonin. In addition, this nausea might also be the result of a digestive infection that is known as helicobacter pylori. However, pregnancy related nausea as the result of these issues actually is rare.

You do also need to keep in mind that if you are tired, stresses, anxious or hungry, your problems associated with pregnancy related nausea actually may become more intense or increase. Therefore, it is important for you to keep well rested, to eat properly and to work to reduce your stress and anxiety levels while you are pregnant.

If you are finding that you are vomiting multiple times during the course of a day, if you are finding that you are having problems keeping things you eat and drink down without vomiting, you may have an extreme form of so-called morning sickness that is known as hyperemesis gravidarum. If that is the case, you must seek medical attention. You might be dehydrated and you may be in need of hospitalization.

It found a third of cravings were not for food, but items such as coal, soap, toothpaste and sponges. Ice and chocolate were also popular.

The poll of 2,231 pregnant women was carried out by the social network website gurgle.com.

Rubber: 1%

Percentages of women reporting unusual cravings, around 31% of total

Chocolate was the most common food craving, followed by ice cream, sweets, spicy food, pickled onions, tropical fruit, curry, doughnuts, marmite, peanut butter, potatoes and nuts.

Mothers-to-be reported cravings for odd combinations of food, the most common being pickles and peanut butter, followed by marmite and ice cream.

Conceiving A Baby BoyWomen could increase their chances of conceiving a baby boy by upping their calorie intake when trying to get pregnant, research revealed yesterday.

Eating a daily bowl of cereal was also linked to having sons.

The study found that women with the highest calorie intake before conception were more likely to conceive a baby boy than women with a lighter diet.

The researchers, from Oxford and Exeter universities, said the results suggested that the dieting habits of women in the western world could help explain the falling male birthrate.

The latest research, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, looked at 740 first-time mothers in the UK.

The women were asked to keep records of their eating habits before and during the early stages of pregnancy.

The study revealed that 56 per cent of women who ate more than 2,200 calories a day before conception had a boy, compared with 45 per cent of women who ate less than 1,850 calories.

The researchers found that 59 per cent of women who had cereal every day had a son, compared with 43 per cent of those who had less than one bowl a week.

Women with sons also had higher levels of nutrients in their diets, such as potassium, calcium and vitamins C, E and B12.

Over 40 years there has been a consistent decline in the proportion of boys being born in western countries – a drop of about one per 1,000 births annually.

Dr Fiona Mathews, one of the researchers from Exeter University, said: “This research may help to explain why in developed countries, where many young women choose to have low- calorie diets, the proportion of boys born is falling.”

IVF research suggests that high levels of glucose encourage the growth of male embryos, while inhibiting female ones.

In humans, skipping breakfast depresses glucose levels and so may be interpreted by the body as indicating poor conditions and low food availability.

Dr Mathews said having a boy was also linked to higher levels of potassium – which could amount to as little as an extra banana a day before conception.

Higher levels of salt were also consumed by those having boys, though the researcher warned that eating large amounts of salty food could raise blood pressure.

“We could say that if you increase your calorie intake slightly while trying to conceive you may be flipping the odds of you having a boy slightly in your favour,” Dr Mathews said.

Bridget Aisbitt, of the British Nutrition Foundation, said there were no specific recommendations for diet prior to conceiving, apart from taking folic acid supplements to prevent spina bifida.

Professor Stuart West, from Edinburgh University, cautioned against using diet to try to influence the sex of a child.

“First, the effect appears to be relatively small, with the sex ratio varying from only 45 per cent sons with low-calorie diets, to 56 per cent sons with high quality diets,” he said.

“Second, similar data in animals such as non-human primates shows huge variation between studies, and so it would be key to determine the repeatability of these results.

“Third, diet will have other effects for both the parent and offspring.”

pregnancy stagesIf you are pregnant — or thinking about getting pregnant — you likely have some questions about the various stages of a pregnancy. In this blog post, we will provide you with some basic and general information about the pregnancy stages.

Generally speaking, medical experts divide a pregnancy term into three pregnancy stages, aptly named the first, second and third trimesters. Each trimester lasts for a trio of months, more or less.

During the initial third or trimester of the pregnancy stages a woman will notice only minimal changes in her outward physical appearance in most instances. The unborn child at this juncture is known as an embryo and is extremely small. With that said, a woman will begin taking on some additional weight during the first trimester of the pregnancy stages.

The second trimester is when the greatest degree of change occurs in regard to the unborn child. Indeed, it is during this portion of the pregnancy stages that an unborn child truly develops physically into a “little human.” It is also during this period that a woman will experience the most significant physical changes that will occur during the course and term of the pregnancy itself.

The final or third trimester of the pregnancy stages is one in which the child, already fully differentiated, grows and takes on weight. During this period, the unborn child, the fetus, goes through the process of the commencement of organ functioning.

Due to the changes in technology in this day and age, in most instances, a child born at any time during the third trimester — but before the ultimate due date — has a very strong chance of survival. (Of course, there are exceptions if the child has a serious disease or illness or if the mother has such a disease or illness that is the cause of the premature birth. Additionally, there are significant variations in survival rates from one country to the next depending on the technology that actually is available in a given nation.)

By understanding the pregnancy stages, you will have a better idea of what is going on during the course and term of a pregnancy. A person armed with this knowledge and information about the pregnancy stages will be better able to appreciate and comprehend the changes that are going on in her own body and the changes that are occurring in regard to her unborn child.

expecting mothers turned away from hospitalsMany hospitals across England had to turn away women in labour last year because they were full, figures show.

Some 70% of trusts provided data, with more than 40% saying they shut their doors - one in 10 more than 10 times - or diverted women to other sites.

Larger maternity units seemed to be more at risk of having to close, the inquiries by the Tories suggested.

The government said maternity units sometimes were forced to take action because it was hard to predict demand.

Labour’s manifesto statement says that by 2009 all women will have choice over where and how they have their baby.

It is a major cause of anxiety to telephone, or even arrive at a maternity unit, when in labour to find the doors are shut

Spokesperson, National Childbirth Trust

It also promised that every woman would be supported by the same midwife throughout her pregnancy.

Out of 103 trusts providing maternity services that responded to the freedom of information request, 42% had to close their units or divert women to another site at least once in 2007 because of capacity problems.

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, one of the biggest maternity providers in England, reported closing 28 times.

Of those trusts that had to turn women away, 74% had more than 3,000 births last year, the Conservatives said.

Again, historically, a home pregnancy test had results that were hard to make out. For example, tests that relied on color changes in the past had colors that changed in ways that were not particularly helpful. In other words, the color changes were minimal or a positive and negative result looked to be about the same color.

In addition, on gone are the days in which a person had to wait and wait for a test result to be realized. A typical home pregnancy test today can provide a user with a result almost immediately.

The costs associated with a typical home pregnancy test have also dropped in recent years. Historically, a home pregnancy test was rather costly. IUD PregnancyIf you are trying to access some basic information on pregnancy, you may have encountered the term IUD pregnancy. In this regard, you may be wondering what is meant by the term IUD pregnancy.

First of all, it is important that you understand how an IUD works in order to understand what is meant by an IUD pregnancy. An IUD is also known as an Inter-Uterine Device. An IUD is a form of contraception in which the device itself is fitted inside a woman’s body and actually works to block contact between sperm and eggs .. a barrier, if you will.

With that said, no form of birth control has proven to be 100% effective. Thus, there are some instances in which a woman who has been fitted with an IUD still becomes pregnant. In some instances, the pregnancy that occurs is what is known by the slang name of IUD pregnancy.

In point of fact, a so-called IUD pregnancy really is a ectopic pregnancy, although it is an ectopic pregnancy that has been caused by the presence of the IUD in a woman’s body.

In general terms, an ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that occurs and develops outside of the woman’s uterus. In other words, the fertilized egg does implant within the uterus as happens in a “normal” pregnancy. Because of the presence of the IUD, the smaller sized sperm managed to “slip” through and fertilize an egg. But, the fertilized egg — being larger in size — is not able to move into the uterus. Thus, it will implant (in some manner) elsewhere in the woman’s reproductive tract — usually in the fallopian tube. Again, when this turn of events is caused by the presence of an IUD in a woman’s body, it oftentimes is referred to as an IUD pregnancy.

A so-called IUD pregnancy can be dangerous. In any case, it is impossible to carry an IUD pregnancy to term … in order for a pregnancy to carry forth to full term, in order for a healthy baby to develop, the egg must implant within the woman’s womb.

An IUD pregnancy can have serious health consequences for a woman. As a result, it is important for a woman who believes that she may be experiencing an IUD pregnancy to seek medical attention promptly. A failure to seek prompt medical attention can result in serious medical problems and — in the worst case scenario — even death.

One benefit that you will enjoy by waiting to until you are forty or over to have a baby is a more stabilized life. By the time most people reach the age of forty years, they have established themselves both professionally and personally. They have achieved a good number of goals that they have set for themselves and they are in a sounder position from a financial standpoint than they were fifteen to twenty years earlier. In short, on many of these levels, they can provide a more grounded and solid foundation for a new entry into the family circle.

Another benefit that a person over forty who us having a baby for the first time has is the ability to spend more time with the baby. In many instances, younger parents have more restrictive work or professional schedules and really find themselves chasing their tails to be able to spend even a small amount of quality time with a child on a regular basis. One of the times in a woman’s life at which she becomes more susceptible to a vaginal yeast infection is when she is pregnant. With this in mind, this chapter has been prepared to provide you with some basic and essential information about pregnancy and yeast infections. Armed with this information you will better equipped to avoid having a yeast infection when pregnant. Moreover, you will be in a better position to more quickly deal with and then resolve a yeast infection that might occur during the course of a pregnancy.

Studies have in fact demonstrated that yeast infections are more common in women during pregnancy than at any other point in their lives. Specifically, women are more prone to yeast infections during the second trimester of a pregnancy.

It is important to understand that a yeast infection during pregnancy does not normally have any negative impact or effect on the pregnancy itself. However, with that said, a yeast infection during pregnancy can be far harder to deal with and resolve than in any other situation or circumstances. In addition, a yeast infection during pregnancy can be particularly uncomfortable as contrasted against yeast infections at other times in a woman’s life.

The reasons that yeast infections are more common during pregnancy actually are rather simplistic. When you are pregnancy, your body undergoes very significant changes. The chemical and hormonal changes that occur in a woman’s body during pregnancy are immense. This includes changes in the vaginal environment.

For example, when a woman is pregnant, there is more sugar contained in the vaginal secretions. Because there is more sugar, there is more of the substance that yeast can feed upon. This ends up causing a significant imbalance in the vaginal area and increases the fungus in the vagina. In the end, this state of affairs results in a vaginal yeast infection.

As a pregnant woman, you need to be on guard for some of the more common symptoms of a yeast infection. When pregnant it is vital for you to begin treatment of a yeast infection immediately if you want to best ensure a more timely resolution of the condition. Again, you need to keep in mind that a yeast infection during pregnancy in most instances will end up being harder to treat and resolve than at any other point in time in a woman’s life.

A baby was born in a McDonald’s restroom in Vancouver, and the mother didn’t even know she was pregnant. It was evening shift last Friday at the fast-food restaurant at State Route 500 and Gher Road when employee Danille Miller suddenly felt ill and ran for the bathroom. Her 16-year-old co-worker, Jaynae Herrera, followed.

”I was like are you pregnant?” Herrera asked.  ”Because she was in the bathroom, and I’m like, are you pregnant? She says, I don’t think so. A couple minutes later, she says the baby is coming out, and that’s when I started freaking out.”

Herrera, with the assistance of a 911 dispatcher, helped her deliver baby Austin Laddusaw, and both mother and baby are fine.

Miller said, “I was so shocked I couldn’t talk. I was shaking the whole time. I didn’t stop shaking until three the next morning. My sister stayed the night with me.”

It still amazes me that a person could not know they are pregnant, till the day off the birth!!!
