The Story of Shorty Shynosaur the Dino

Shorty the Shynosaur:

Rescue at Mammoth Rock

If you look deep enough in the jungles of Punjabia you will discover the world's smallest dinosaur. His real name was Kyle, but all the dinosaurs in his class called him, Shorty. No one ever called him Kyle except, of course, his dad.

Shorty was a very good student. The only class Shorty didn't like was P.E.

He couldn't run as fast as the other dinosaurs and they always made fun of the way he threw the ball which was almost as big as he was. When it came to outdoor games, Shorty was always the last to be chosen.

Shorty was also very quiet. Because he was so small he had trouble making friends. The other dinosaurs didn't seem to notice the little dinosaur who tried to stay out of the way of their feet.

Then came the day when all that changed. Tommy T-Rex had never been the nicest dinosaur on the playground and he loved to pick on anyone smaller than himself. Perhaps that's why he noticed Shorty.

Are you sure you're old enough to be in school? You're smaller than my little sister, Tommy laughed. You'd better be careful or someone might step on you.

Shorty pushed his glasses up on his nose and was about to say something when Tommy left to play with some of the bigger dinosaurs.

Tommy is right, Shorty thought, I am small. I've never seen a dinosaur my age as small as me.

That night at supper Shorty's Dad noticed how sad his son looked. Are you alright, Kyle? he asked.

I'm smaller than anyone else in my class. Even baby dinosaurs are bigger than me. Shorty pushed some peas around on his plate as he waited for his dad to say something.

Is there something wrong with the food? Dad asked.

I don't think I can eat my peas, Shorty replied miserably.

Shorty's father guessed what was wrong with his son. I know you want to be a big dinosaur, but each dinosaur is different. Some are large and some have horns. Some are green and some are tan. Some like vegetables and some eat meat. Each dinosaur has something important that only they can do.

The only thing I'm good at is getting picked on, Shorty said.

Dad made sure that Shorty looked him in the eye before he said, You just haven't discovered what you are supposed to do yet, Kyle. Don't be sad - one day you will discover an important thing only you can do.

The next day Shorty walked to school wearing the world's smallest shoes, the world's smallest hat, and the world's smallest glasses for the world's smallest dinosaur. It had been raining earlier, so Shorty wore a jacket so he could stay dry. Shorty had to start early because it always took him longer to walk to school than other dinosaurs.

Hey everyone, look who's coming, Tommy T-Rex said as the other dinosaurs looked down at Shorty. You know, I've been thinking, your name really ought to be Shorty the Shynosaur. After all, I've never met anyone shorter than you and I don't know anyone as quiet as you.

Soon all the dinosaurs were singing, Shorty the Shynosaur, Shorty the Shynosaur. Shorty was embarrassed, but didn't want the other dinosaurs to see how sad he was, so he began to walk away.

Help! Please help me, Tanya T-Rex called from the nearby trees.

Tommy raced to where his mother stood. She was worried and seemed very upset. What's wrong, Mom?

Oh, it's just dreadful, Tommy. One of my eggs was bumped from the nest during the rain this morning and rolled down into a crack in Mammoth Rock.

All of the dinosaurs raced to the most famous rock in Punjabia Jungle to see if they could help. Tommy tried to reach the egg but his arm was too big. Iggy, the Iguanodon scratched at the rock, but the egg didn't move.

E,e,e,Excuse me, Shorty said as he walked close to the gap in the rock. Maybe I could help.

What could you do? You're too small. Tommy said.

Tanya T-Rex looked unhappy as she glanced at her son, then she looked at Shorty and said, You might be the only one who CAN help. You sure are a small dinosaur.

I know, Shorty said, then he thought, Maybe this is the important thing I am supposed to do.

Shorty pushed up the glasses on his nose once more and began to climb down toward the egg. He knew that if he didn't get the egg back to Tanya soon, the dinosaur inside might not make it.

It wasn't long before dinosaurs from all over Punjabia Jungle were gathered at Mammoth Rock wondering if the egg could be saved. They began to say many things to encourage Shorty.

Once Shorty reached the egg he noticed that it rested on a ledge and was ready to fall into a dark cave below.

Shorty quickly took off his jacket and wrapped it around the egg and pulled it away from the ledge. Then he tied the arms of the jacket together and began to pull the egg to safety. It took some time because the egg was almost as big as Shorty.

When Shorty made it back into the sunlight he was tired, but very happy. Tanya took the egg and cradled it in her arms while her son, Tommy, picked up Shorty and said, Let's hear it for Shorty the Shynosaur. He is a hero.

Shorty smiled as every member of his class, every adult, and every jungle official began to cheer. The jungle's smallest dinosaur was he only one who could save the day.

Just as Tommy was about to set Shorty back on the ground, Shorty saw his dad walk toward him through the crowd. Tommy sat Shorty down as Dad said, I am so proud of you, Son, he smiled. Do you have any idea what you did today?

An important thing that only I could do? Shorty asked.

That's exactly what you did, Kyle. Dad hugged his son.

The littlest dinosaur smiled and said, Dad, you can call me Shorty.

Are you sure? Dad asked.

Absolutely. As the two walked down the path, Shorty asked, So, what else can I do, Dad?

I think you are just beginning to learn the important things that you can do. Dad smiled happily before saying, The adventure is just beginning, Shorty - It's just beginning.
